The Lobby Lounge, Shangri-La: Authentic Singaporean Breakfast

Singapore's vibrant local food scene plays a quintessential part in its cultural heritage, and The Lobby Lounge at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore supports the preservation of this culinary heritage. With the success of The Lobby Lounge's Heritage Lunch Buffet, the restaurant extends the indulgence of perennial local favourites all under one roof with the launch of six signature dishes available during breakfast. The Lobby Lounge's Heritage Breakfast offers an authentic Singaporean breakfast spread showcasing national breakfast favourites, such as Nasi Lemak, Roti Prata, Soft-Boiled Eggs with Kaya Toast, Wanton Mee, Carrot Cake and Hainanese Porridge.

Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore worked with prominent local food advocate Dr Leslie Tay to curate the breakfast menu. The hotel also collaborated with popular local food brands, The Coconut Club and Springleaf Prata Place to showcase their respective signature recipes for Nasi Lemak and Roti Prata.

A Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand Singapore 2018 awardee, The Coconut Club is renowned for its Nasi Lemak -- jasmine rice infused with the fragrance of fresh coconut milk and served with crispy anchovies, peanuts, fried egg, sliced cucumber and sambal chilli that offers a real kick. The dish is completed with a serving of spice-marinated chicken deep-fried till crisp and golden-brown.

Purple Sage Elevates Catering Service With New Concepts

Purple Sage today elevated Singapore’s food service by bringing the ‘farm to plate’ concept into catering as it unveiled its new logo at a showcase event. While consumers today are particular about the freshness of the ingredients used in the cooking, feasting with all the senses is as important as the dishes and setting looking Instagrammable. Clients seek solutions beyond traditional dining experiences. Bearing these in mind, Purple Sage introduced new concepts such as “The Secret Garden”. The team of chefs literally handpicked live ingredients such as varieties of cress such as Cress Coriander and Cress Red Veined Sorrel at the cooking stations. Non-GMO chicken and fresh fish from sustainable sources are combined with food technology to present all-sensory and well-presented holistic gastronomic dishes a la minute (to order).

We have brought the farm to plate concept in a sustainable way into the catering service so as to stay ahead in the industry while supporting local farmers.”

In buffets, it can be observed that there is much wastage especially leftover food that has to be discarded. Purple Sage has come up with a solution by doing away with chafing dish sets. It replaced disposable ware with crockery made of ‘opeh’ (leaves of the Betal Nut Palm).

Spice World Hot Pot Baijiu Promotion with Masterclass, 香天下火锅

Baijiu ( 白酒 ), China’s national liquor gets a toast from Spice World Hot Pot ( 香天下火锅 ), the latest Sichuan hot pot franchise to hit Singapore. A collaboration with the Singapore China Baijiu company and Spice World Hot Pot, top Chinese Master Taster Ms Xu Huan hosted key journalists in the appreciation of three of China’s most popular Baijiu brands - Moutai, Wuliangye and National Cellar Guojiao 1573. The masterclass session also included a DIY Baijiu segment whereby journalists got to create their own liquor using individual distilling kits.

Baijiu, infamously known as Firewater, is distilled from sorghum and rice. Water, sugar and yeast are added to the ingredients and fermented in clay jars buried underground. It is then distilled and aged for anywhere between six months to years, sometimes even up to 50 years. Baijiu is commonly consumed during festivals, weddings, celebrations and business meetings. It is usually served neat in a shot glass and drunk in one gulp. Toasting rituals or Ganbei (cheers) accompany every Baijiu drinking occasion.

Foodies heading to Osaka will not miss this huge crab signage along the famous Dotomburi Street. In fact, there are couple of them spotted during our last trip there.

Kani Doraku ( かに道楽 ) is one of the most iconic restaurants in Osaka. With outlets all over Japan, Kani Doraku serves various types of crustacean such as King Crabs, Snow Crabs and Rock Crabs.

There are a wide assortment of crab dishes, but I strongly recommend you to take the lunch / dinner courses which start from a reasonable 2,500 Yen/person ( approx USD 23/pax ) instead of going Ala Carte, as courses are more pocket-friendly and you can savour the different types of cooking style.

Hama Steak House Wagyu Teppanyaki Review ( ステーキハウス ハマ 六本木 )

Famous for its Japanese Teppanyaki, Hama Steak House ( ステーキハウス ハマ ) is definitely one of my favourite hunts whenever I visit Tokyo. I have been to their Ginza branch on many occasions, but this time tried the food at their Roppongi outlet instead.

Hama Steak House Roppongi is less than 10 minutes walk from the Subway Roppongi Station. The Japanese restaurant is easily spotted once you have past Tokyo Midtown ( 東京ミッドタウン ), a 5-storey retail galleria.

On other occasions, I would usually order their Chef Course ( シェフコース ) at 19,000¥++/pax ( approx USD 170 ), but it was my birthday so we decided to go for the Elegant Course ( 優雅~エレガントコース ) at ¥ 30,000++/pax.

If you ever visit Tokyo and looking for good Wagyu Beef, this restaurant is a must-try! Well, I won't go into details on the taste since I had previously reviewed, but they are quite consistent in their food unlike some restaurants. Let’s check out what their USD 300 course looks like!

Ninja Akasaka, Tokyo’s Themed Restaurant ( 忍者赤坂レストラン )

Be warned foodies, this is not your usual kind of restaurant! Diners enter this Japanese eatery through secret doors in pitch dark led by a Ninja. Even the entrance is hard to locate; it took us some effort to find the main entrance to the restaurant which is a small black door almost non-existent.

Yap, I am talking about Ninja Akasaka ( 忍者赤坂 ) in Tokyo. Once you are inside the Ninja restaurant, you will be greeted by Ninjas who would usher you to your village.

What kind of food will diners get? Well, you will get Ninja-inspired dishes like this Shuriken Star-Blades Grissini ( 手裏剣グリッシーニ ) and most importantly, the restaurant serves really delicious food. Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo, one of Japan’s most prestigious international hotels located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, the British author who created the famous series of children’s stories about the fictional character Peter Rabbit, by hosting a special event entitled “ Peter Rabbit™ Hotel Carnival ". During the course of this event to be held through June 30, 2017, special desserts created in image of characters from the story of Peter Rabbit will be served in All Day Dining Jurin’s sweets buffet. Moreover, special Peter Rabbit-themed menus will be served at our other restaurant facilities. Beatrix Potter first created the character “ Peter Rabbit ” in 1893 in a picture post card sent to a five year old child, and later wrote the children’s story “ The Tale of Peter Rabbit ”. The story depicts the playful lead character Peter Rabbit playing in gardens in the picturesque countryside of England, and is still read around the world even today over 100 years after its original publication. “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” is also said to be recognized by nearly 100% of Japanese women over the age of 45 years. The “ Peter Rabbit™ Hotel Carnival ” event is one of a series of special events designed to commemorate famous stories such as “ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ”, “ The Little Mermaid ” and others hosted by the Keio Plaza Hotel in recent years, and is part of our Hotel’s policy of providing unique experience to our guests.

Red King Crab or otherwise known as Paralithodes Camtschaticus, is the largest and most common species of the Alaskan king crab species.
