torch ginger flower remedy anti inflammatory properties arthritis
Used in Malay cuisine, Ginger Flower Bud aka Torch Ginger Flower ( 姜花 ) is part of the ginger family and is high in antioxidants and loaded with anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. More importantly, its anti-inflammatory properties can help treat Arthritis ( 关节炎 ).

ginger flower buds for penang assam laska recipe
The remedy was given to me recently by a trusted source mainly to address the issue of Arthritis. When cut, this pretty pink edible flower bud releases an aromatic fragrance and you will love the scent even more when you put it into the water to boil.

As the Chinese saying goes “ 姜越老越辣 “ - literally translating into “ The Older The Ginger, The Spicer It Is “, meaning The Elders Know Better. I have not seen nor heard of this flower but after speaking with my 89-year-old mom, she said it is popularly known as Rojak Flower. The wise old lady went on to explain that the bud is usually sliced thinly to be used in salads such as the traditional Rojak, and it is easily available in Tekka Market.

Thanks to my Malaysian neighbour who uses the flower buds in her cooking, she told me where I could find them near our home. Also called Bunga Kantan in Malaysia, the buds are used to zest up curries or the famous Penang Assam Laksa.

* Recipe for 1 Mug of Torch Ginger Flower Juice
Ingredients:
3 stalks Ginger Flower Buds
3 mugs Water
  • Method:
  • rojak flowers bunga kantan anti cancer properties
  • Chop of end of stalk. Peel off any brown areas on stalk, and remove any bruised petals. Rinse.

  • Cut stalk into half or about 3 inches, and chop the flower bud into two about 3cm in length.

    * See paragraph at the end of post using 9 stalks at one go
  • Put the cut Ginger Flower Buds in pot of water and bring to boil. Continue to simmer for about 40 minutes to reduce water to 1 mug.
  • tekka market bunga kantan recipe
  • Turn off heat and let it cool. Use a strainer to filter the flowers. To avoid wastage, you may wanna squeeze out the extra juices from the residue.
When to Drink
Drink 1 mug 2 to 3 times a day at room temperature after meal.
To see results, try drinking for about 2 weeks.

Where to Buy, and Price Per Stalk
  • Woodlands Vista Point Market – 50 cents to 70 cents ( prices fluctuate )
  • Woodlands Marsiling Malay Stall selling vegetables ( outside Sheng Siong ) – 60 cents
  • Woodlands Marsiling Sheng Siong – $1.15
  • Ang Mo Kio Market opposite Bishan Park - $1
How to Store
Refrigerate, or put Ginger Flowers in a vase of water.

* Being the lazy me, I make 9 stalks each time which is equivalent to 3 mugs after reduction ( adjust boiling time accordingly ). This is good for 1 day of consumption. But if you like to drink it fresh, the above recipe is only for 1 time consumption, which means you will have to boil 3 times a day.
