My Blog Has Been Hacked! What Should I Do? Lesson Learnt

what to do when blog is hacked
Having your blog hacked is probably one of the most upsetting experiences, and is certainly terrifying especially if you are not savvy in html codes etc.

Luxury Haven runs on Blogger platform since 2009 and that fateful day, I almost suffered a heart attack. When I woke up in the morning to check my blog, I was puzzled to find an unfamiliar background at Luxury Haven. Initial thought was perhaps my Leaderboard ad has malware, but I knew something had gone terribly wrong when I failed to access my blog settings. The Blogger Navbar had disappeared; all my blog tabs had been replaced by the hacker’s website tabs which means that whatever I click on, it will be directed to their site ( see Tabs above Hacker's website image ). That’s when I started to panicked.

facebook blog hacked requesting for help
In distress, I posted in Facebook and Blogger Forum asking for help as I just couldn’t think properly. Many shared my concern and gave several suggestions. Unfortunately, most were only familiar with Wordpress and sadly to my surprise, I also could not get any helpful answers from Blogger Forum. One Blogger expert in the forum replied me saying it is impossible for Blogger to get hacked unlike Wordpress. It seemed that it is very rare for Blogger to get hacked as compared to Wordpress. So I was stuck!

So influencers, what should you do if your blog has been hacked? In this post, I shall be sharing my recent horrifying experience and hope you guys can gain some insights from it.

What To Do If Your Blog Has Been Hacked
  • Changed your password immediately.
  • Request for help online, and pray for the best.
  • Contact your host company and if they can’t help, seek assistance from the professionals to remove malware from your website but be prepared to pay hundreds of dollars up. ( I tried calling GoDaddy as I had bought my custom domain from them previously. They quoted me $400+ to clean up my blog in 30 minutes, but could not guarantee my blog will be in its original state. Hence, I decided to drop this option. )
  • Do not panic! It is easier said than done, but try to compose yourself if you can’t get any help.
  • I hope you have kept copies of emails for moderating the comments in your blog. Try accessing from there if the hacker has blocked all access to the settings via your blog. Due to recent springtime cleaning for Blogger, users have stopped receiving email notifications for comments. Thankfully, I recalled keeping my emails and managed to access via the comment moderation in my email.
  • Once you have gained access, go to Blogger Dashboard and click on Settings => Basic => Permissions and check under Blog Authors. Make sure you are the only Admin and immediately delete any alien account.
blogger tips how to restore your blog
  • If you have the habit of backing up your blog, you can try to override the hacker’s template by restoring your original site. To do that, go to Blogger Dashboard and click on Theme => Backup / Restore, then upload your backup file from your computer.
blogger tips how to import blog content
  • Next, import your blog content by going to Settings => Other => Import and Back Up. Click on Import Content and upload your back up.
  • Hopefully the above 2 steps help. If your blog is back to normal, make sure the malware is gone too by utilizing some of the online resources to check your blog status, such as:
    - Web Inspector
    - Malware Removal
    - Virus Total
  • You may have to Submit a Request to Review to Google if your site is blacklisted,.
  • If the above does not work, I am afraid you will have to fork out some money to seek professional help. That being said, if your blog is hacked, the symptoms may be different from mine.
What I Have Learnt From This Experience
  • Keep calm and think if you are unable to get any help.
blogger tips how to back up content
  • Always adopt a good habit of backing up your blog contents. Thank goodness I have back-ups! To do that, go to Blogger Dashboard and click on Settings. Under Other, you can choose to Import Content or Back Up Content. Click on Save to Your Computer to Back Up Content.
blogger tips how to restore your blog
  • Back up your template too. Go to Blogger Dashboard and click on Theme => Backup / Restore, and then Download Theme. Although some gadgets may not be backed up, at least most your widgets will be saved.
  • Get a strong password, and enable 2-factor authentication on your Google account.
Well, I am just relieved my blog is up and running again within 24 hours. It could have been worse. As to how my blog was hacked, I am still puzzled and unable to get an answer. How did they gain access to my blog in the first place since my email was not even compromised?

Are you blogging at Wordpress or Blogger? Anyone shares similar experience? How did you handle it?

  5. Whooaaa!!! I would cry buckets if your precious blog belonged to me. You have so much important contents and worldwide followers to date.

I have many friends in the IT industry and they sometimes shared about their college days where the IT subject would require them to ponder into how hacking is done esp on weaker domains. So many actually went into hacking by breaking the codes just to acknowledge their own abilities without messing the contents. They would just log in and log out quietly. Even the US government's websites were not spared no matter how high tech they adopted. I would blame one's bad luck to be the chosen victims. Some useful tips would be changing passwords every week which many would not do it. Now you got me worried that I should actually back up my posts even though they are worthless topics. LOLOL

Stay safe and strong always Shirley.
