Crispy Thai Prawn Cakes with Sweet Chilli Sauce ( 香脆泰式虾饼 )

One of our favourite dishes in Thai restaurants are these popular Thai Prawn Cakes. They make a great appetizer, and definitely a crowd pleaser. Paired with a sweet chilli sauce, these make great finger food too!

Crunchy on the outside, and juicy inside, these Crispy Thai Prawn Cakes with Sweet Chilli Sauce ( 香脆泰式虾饼 ) are not difficult to make at all. Using Panko, a Japanese-style breadcrumb for coating deep-fried food such as Tonkatsu, the result is a light and succulent patty.

1 dozen Large Prawns
200g Fish Paste
1 Egg ( beaten )
½ Minced Garlic
1 sprig Parsley or Cilantro ( chopped )
1 cup Japanese Panko Breadcrumbs
½ tsp Fish Sauce
Pinch of Salt and Pepper
Multi-purpose Flour for coating
Sweet Chilli Sauce for dipping
Oil for deep-frying

  • Remove prawn heads and keep for other uses such as making prawn stock. Remove shells and devein. Rinse prawns. Set aside about a quarter and cut into bite-size pieces while mincing the rest. This combination will give the prawn cakes more crunch.

  • To mince the prawns, you can chop them manually or add chopped parsley / cilantro, seasoning and prawns in a blender and blend well.

  • Next, dust patty with flour, then dip into beaten egg. Lastly, coat with breadcrumbs.
