Explore the streets of Ipoh’s Old Town, discover popular restaurants, eateries and more! Known as food paradise in Malaysia, join us as we uncover the town’s gastronomic heritage, sampling an array of food arranged by Tourism of Perak for our media tasting sessions. I have to admit they are pretty decent and way above my expectation. Be it lunch, dinner or tea-time, you won’t go wrong with the following dining picks which are also Halal-certified.

From the unpretentious humble stalls to popular restaurant dining, a trip to Ipoh is never complete without a whiff of Malaysia’s authentic cooking with a blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Nyonya flavours.

tourism perak ipoh hainan chicken rice bean sprouts
Savour the city’s culinary traditions such as their most talk-about Bean Sprouts. Famous for its plump and crunchy texture, Ipoh Bean Sprouts are produced in Buntong where the rich calcium carbonate underground water adds to its unique taste.

Yum Yum Restaurant ( 好味餐廳 )
5, Persiaran Greenhill, 30450 Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia

Start your culinary adventure at the popular Yum Yum Restaurant, serving authentic Asian cuisine with a blend of Chinese, Nyonya, Vietnamese and Thai food. Be charmed by displays of Peranakan exhibits such as the traditional Nyonya Kebayas as you stepped into the cozy restaurant.

Thai-Style Egg ( 泰國煎蛋 )

Our Top Picks:

tourism perak restoran yum yum assam samabal prawns
Love the Assam Sambal Prawns ( 亜三蝦 ) which was well-executed with a crunchy texture. Their sourish nyonya sauce with a rich depth of flavour tasted great with just a plate of fragrant rice.

ipoh restoran yum yum review vietnamese garlic chicken
Yum Yum’s Vietnamese Garlic Chicken ( 佛山雞 ) was extremely tasty, and interestingly topped with some pickles which we thought was a good combination.

malaysia tourism perak yum yum restaurant fried brinjal
The Fried Brinjal ( 炸茄子 ) were cut and deep fried French fries style, and stir-fried with minced meat. A unique dish and a must-try.

1919 Restaurant
1 Jalan Medan Ipoh 6, Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh

Delight your palate at 1919 Restaurant located just opposite Tesco Shopping Mall, specializing in catering and private functions. Serving classic Southeast Asian cuisine, the restaurant spots a simple and spacious interior; nothing fanciful but food packs a punch.

Sizzling Venison Pepper Sauce Style ( 铁板黑椒式 )

Our Top Picks:

tourism perak 1919 restaurant ipoh review yam ring
An impressive mix of vegetable tempura in Yam Ring is the Kerabu Salad ( 沙拉腰果 ). The battered Kang Kong leaves and Eggplant had a satisfying crunch; coupled with strips of tantalizing Mango Salad in the Yam basket, the appetizer is rather addictive.

tourism perak 1919 restaurant ipoh review homemade tofu
Another winning creation is the 1919 Special Tofu ( 招牌豆腐 ). Drenched in a tangy homemade sauce, the visually stunning bean curd filled with scrumptious seafood and snow peas tasted as good as it looks.

tourism perak ipoh food 1919 restaurant review pancake
End your meal with a sweet note with the restaurant's Chinese Pan Cake with Ice-Cream ( 中式窝餅配雪糕 ). Served warm, the crispy pancake in lotus paste tasted especially good with scoops of ice-creams.

tourism perak ipoh hainan chicken rice bean sprouts
Bean Sprouts
Similar to Singapore, Ipoh is also famous for its Chicken Rice. Ipoh Hainan Chicken Rice is a casual eatery to suit the budget conscious. Besides their tasty Roasted Hainanese Chicken Rice, you gotta try their delicious Char Kway Teow. It was definitely one of the best I have ever eaten. The other must-have is their Deep-Fried Tauhu with Oyster Sauce, which was crispy on the exterior and soft inside. It seems that the Kerabu Salad is a popular starter in Ipoh as we were also served the Kerabu Mangga like the other restaurants we visited earlier. Of course, not forgetting Ipoh's famous Bean Sprouts!

perak ipoh hainan chicken rice ambla juice kedondong
We also tried the Kedondong Juice or commonly known as Ambarella. A tropical fruit found in South East Asia, the green fruit is said to contain 30 times more Vitamin C than an orange. Served with sour plums, the refreshing drink is sourish, but we found them overly sweet.

Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah ( 奇峰豆腐花 )
49, Jalan Theatre, 30300 Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia

visit perak 2017 funny mountain tau fu fah
The next food trail took us to one of the most famous Soybean Pudding stalls in Ipoh, the Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah. The guide told us that it is the most expensive Beancurd Dessert in Ipoh charging at RM1.50 for a tiny bowl. I'm not a fan unlike hubby, who joined the queue to get a bowl. He commended that the Beancurd is really smooth and silky.

visit perak 2017 sightseeing ipoh concubine lane
If you appreciate little joy, you will enjoy walking through the narrow alley of Concubine Lane which is a major tourist attraction known for its heritage value, filled with shops and pop-up stalls selling souvenirs and food.

Gaharu Tea Valley Gopeng ( 務邊沉香山茶園 )
Give yourself a cooling treat under the scorching weather at Gaharu Tea Valley Gopeng in Concubine Lane. Their Ice-Cream, made from HOGA Tea, arises from the finest quality of Gaharu leaves from the Aquilaria tree.

ipoh concubine lane ding feng tau fu fa
Ding Feng Teow Chew Tau Fu Fa ( 頂豐驰名豆腐花专卖店 )
Here is another place to savour Ipoh’s famous Beancurd dessert. Comparing to Funny Mountain Tau Fu Fah, Ding Feng Teow Chew Tau Fu Fa seems to have more variations like Sea Bird Nest Tau Fu Fa, and the caramelized Teow Chew Tau Fu Fa.
