Let There Be Light At EPW Laser + Medical Aesthetics Clinic!

They say money can't buy you everything, but at least I know there's something money can buy you - a Pretty Face! With advanced cosmetic & aesthetic technology, you can have lasers to help get rid of acne problems if your pimple creams don’t work, there’re Botox & Fillers to disguise those train tracks on your face if those skincare products can’t help, & there’re also a variety of treatments to target on pigmentation problems.

Pigmentation hates me!! I’d been through a series of laser treatment for those ugly spots on my face & just when I thought it got better, they came back with a vengeance! I’m sure you’ve read about my recent sponsored family vacation to Penang just recently. The blazing sun there was real unfriendly & no matter how much sunscreen I buttered on my face, it wasn’t fiery enough to combat the raging rays. So I’m back to square one!

Then, something magical happened……… EPW Laser + Medical Aesthetics Clinic seemed to have heard my cries & came to my rescue!

epw laser medical aesthetics clinic reception area
Nestled in the heart of the Orchard Road shopping belt is the chic & spacious EPW Laser + Medical Aesthetics Clinic, on Level 17 of Tong Building. Upon arrival at the clinic, I was greeted by a huge seating area at the reception with EPW’s line of skincare products neatly arranged on its shelf. I was then attended by one of their attentive Patient Care Counsellors for my registration.

I was pleased to be introduced to Dr Wong, EPW’s Medical Director with 20 years in medical aesthetics practice. Dr Wong explained to me that those pigmentation on my face are Melasma, a condition that’s characterized by tan or brown patches. He then suggested using the Dual Yellow Light Laser to treat the #Melasma. The combination of perfect wavelength, the perfect penetration depth & the perfect power density makes this treatment most unique & effective.

The spotlight is on a laser treatment that has been creating happy waves amongst their patients. The clinic’s “Let There Be Light” treatment is most popular with patients for being virtually PAINLESS & NO DOWNTIME!!

So how does the Dual Yellow Light Laser work?
As its name suggests, it's the only laser to emit two lights – a yellow light for vascular problems, rosacea, melasma, skin rejuvenation & brightening, & a green light to treat #pigmentation. With a wavelength of 578nm, the yellow light matches the peak absorption of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen. This allows it to coagulate vessels & treat blood vessel related problems without damaging surrounding skin. The green light on the other hand has a wavelength of 511nm, ideally absorbed by melanin contained within melanocytes to reduce pigmentation without collateral damage.

My Treatment - Dual Yellow Light Laser (Copper Bromide)

Before I began my treatment, Patient Care Counsellor Cynthia took few shots of me.

I was then led into one of EPW’s treatment rooms for the procedure. The room was bright, spacious & spanking clean. It somewhat resembles a hospital operating theatre. I wasn’t surprised at all, since Dr Wong is a pioneer aesthetics physician as well as a surgeon.

Numbing cream was then applied on my face after cleansing. It took just 5 mins for the cream to take effect. I can’t show you what was going on in the room as no photo-taking was allowed during the laser session.

Following that, ultrasound gel was applied on my face. #DualYellowLight Laser equipment was used, first with a bigger tip which helped to even out the skin tone & lighten the dark circles. Dr Wong used 10% green (Y10G) to work on the superficial pigmentation. The doctor then used a smaller tip to target pigmented dots.

Dr Wong noticed couple of oil bumps on my face & extracted them. See the 2 red dots on each side of my face? Those were the extraction spots. The whole session took about 20 mins. Cynthia provided me with a mirror to view my face.  Not too bad at all, just some slight redness which disappeared in no time. I was then led to a basin to cleanse my face again.

Following that, Cynthia first applied the Epiderma Skin Renewal Serum, a powerhouse serum containing a unique #Epiderma Growth Factor as well as the Epiderma Complex for cell protection & regeneration. It's believed to stimulate healthy cell turnover for brighter skin. I would need to apply that for two days at home as well. She then applied the Epiderma Intensité Hydrating Complex on my skin (a cell hydrator that's believed to provide superior moisture to the skin, & has a powerful concentrate of #Hyaluronic Acid).

Cynthia finished by applying the tinted Epiderma Suncreen that contains UVA & UVB protection.

I was then given the following products to use till my next session with Dr Wong three weeks later:
  • Derma-A Forte Retinol Cream @ SGD 152 – helps regulate skin turnover. With each use, fine lines & wrinkles start to fade & complexion becomes smoother & radiant.
  • DermaClear Ultra Cream @ SGD 138 – An advanced skin brightening formula that contains Alpha-Arbutin, Vitamin C & botanical extracts to brighten & clarify the skin & prevent oxidative damage. Regular use promotes a luminous, even-toned complexion.
  • Ultra-high Protection Sunscreen SPF 30 @ SGD 75 - Comes in shades of Ivory, Almond, Natural & Cashmere, this broad spectrum UV protector is designed for sensitive skin & does not contain parabens or chemical sun filters. In addition, it contains licorice extract which has anti-inflammatory properties.

Cynthia had earlier applied the lighter Almond shade on me, but I like the Natural better as I prefer a darker shade. You maybe aware that I favour tinted sunscreen over BB Cream & I don’t like foundation at all. So this sunscreen suits me. The shade blended pretty well with my skin tone & gives me enough coverage especially for my dark circles.

My Thoughts:
From the moment I stepped into the clinic right until I left the place, I was met with EPW’s dedicated team of friendly & cheerful staff. Those who had attended to me were attentive, polite & knowledgeable.

So, was the treatment really PAINLESS & NO DOWNTIME as claimed? Yes, indeed! I experienced no pain at all during the Dual Yellow Light Laser treatment! I’ve extremely low-threshold of pain & I was really amazed the entire session breezed through comfortably; the only laser treatment I’ve experienced to date with NO PAIN!!  Ok, ok, I've to admit the oil bump extraction was painful, but that was it!

Dr EP Wong took time to explain the steps while he was running the laser on me, & he was reassuring & extremely gentle throughout the procedure. Though serious & strict most of the time, Dr Wong does have his moments of humour at times. And when he does that, he can be pretty charming! No wonder he has a strong following of aficionados from all over the world especially the Indonesian Tai-tais.

The Price:
In treating pigmentation using the Dual Yellow Light Laser, the price is from SGD 1,500 per session. A minimum of 3 sessions are needed to see results. It’s best to consult with the doctor to see if you require a Dual Yellow Light laser procedure. Dr Wong would need to examine your skin condition, skin type, & determine what sort of treatment would suit your skin. It'll be good to see the doctor to share your concerns, needs & expectations. However, depending on your skin condition, Dr Wong is able to best advise you on how many treatments you would need & also customise a program to suit your needs. Some patients may require more treatments than others.

Let There Be Light (With Dual Yellow Light Laser) is a non-ablative laser widely considered to be the most effective procedure for epidermal melasma, rosacea & fine capillaries. A series of weekly treatments will also rejuvenate your skin by stimulating collagen production to improve the skin texture, reduce fine lines, & even out the skin colour. Over at #EPW, all procedures are performed by doctors only. You can be assured of the high-standard of quality & professionalism at EPW Laser + Medical #Aesthetics Clinic!

Thank you Dr Wong, for your care & patience! Special thanks to Simon for making all the arrangements!

    1. HYL, u're too kind! Wish I look as young as u, sweetie!

  8. This clinic sure looks very big and inviting. Brown spot, pigmentation spot on your face? Where? I can't find any. Mmmm.... probably i have to put your face under the microscope to check it out again. Surprisingly, the price of the products isn't as costly as I thought it would be...

    1. DS, light ones but pretty obvious tho if u look closely. Lol! I was also surprised by their product pricing. Real value for money!

  9. Hi Shirley, what I liked is the simple and clear way you write posts that even people with no idea of the subject get a gist of the things that you are blogging about.

This post clearly explains the benefit of some of the modern methods that can be adopted to get rid of pigmentation that is difficult to erase even with the application of expensive creams. But in your case like deli simplicity commented no one can spot such shades on your face that we all see in the first photo here. Well, if you think there is and the doctor treated it then thats it, period.

Melasma is a very common skin disorder that may become worse especially because of sun exposure. It is due to hormonal imbalance. Thyroid disorder also can cause melasma.

Sun exposure prevention and protection are the key factors in the treatment of melasma. Along with sunscreens usage of a wide-brimmed hat is also recommended while spending time outdoors.

Discussions like this will surely help women understand and treat such problems asap. There are many who suffer because of this condition and a large number of them are clueless what to do.

Thanks for writing a comment on my blog. I really appreciate it.

    1. Rajiv, thks so much for your kind note & sharing your thoughts with us! From the pix you mentioned above, you can actually see some dark patches on the side of my face (extreme left of the pix). Mine is a mild case & it isn't that dark. Hence, I've to treat it before it gets worse.

After my 3 sessions with EPW, I'll be posting the 'before' shots side by side together with 'after' shots for a clearer comparison as with all my other aesthetic posts. Hopefully, my dark patches will lighten by then :)

You're absolutely right, sunscreen is important indeed. I must remind myself not to be lazy & to apply them even when I'm indoors as advised by Dr Wong as sun rays may come into the house.

  10. How lucky you got to try the laser treatment. I have quite a few dark spots that I wanted to treat for years...but always afraid it will hurt. Your treatment sounds like something perfect for me. :) Thanks for sharing the information.

    1. Amy, u may wanna chk with your doc in the US if the Dual Yellow Light is suitable for u. U'll like it that it's very comfortable.

  11. Hi Shirley, the clinic look so classy and more like a spa centre. Wah... you already look very pretty ley with nice skin, so after laser look 20 years younger? :)

But no choice, most women are very vain and scared to grow old. LOL

    1. Amelia, hahaha! That'll be an achievement, isn't it?

  12. A lovely write up, Shirley. I bet it was a wonderful treatment!

    1. Azlin, thks dear! The word "painless" is amazing enough, & I need to see the wonder of it after 3 sessions......

  13. Hi Shirley, thanks for sharing. U hv really beautiful skin.. Been thinking to hv my skin treated for acne and uneven skin tone. Wonder how sustainable this treatment is and whether follow ups after some months are necessary?

    1. Thanks for your kind words, JL! I'm not too sure about acne since my concern is melasma unlike yours. I suggest you consult the clinic directly since Dr Wong will have to take a look at your skin before telling you what's best for you.

On the other hand, you can also check out Lutronic Mosaic ECO2 Laser, a fractional skin peeling laser system which is used in acne scar treatment.
