Mentaiko or ‘spicy cod roe’, is marinated roe of Pollock & it’s a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine. The cod roe works wonders to sharpen every distinguished flavour in an appetizer. Mentaiko is usually eaten with rice called 'Onigiri', but is also enjoyed by itself with sake.
Last Magical Christmas At Home, I made these Baked Hotate Mentaiyaki (帆立の明太焼き) & my son simply couldn't get enough of the scallops.
These Mentaiko came nicely packed from a souvenir shop at the Narita Airport for ¥1,000.
Sometimes, I would visit the Ameyoko (アメ横) market in Tokyo to buy. But due to time constraint, I got this just before I boarded the plane. These are easily available at Japanese supermarkets, but of course prices at the Ameyoko market are very much cheaper. I'll talk more about it in a separate post later. Well, here's the yummy & succulent recipe.........
Ingredients:

Method:
- Clean scallops & shells thoroughly to remove dirt & dry well.
- Preheat oven at 220°C.
- Remove mentaiko from its sac by using a spoon to scrap it out.
- Mix mentaiko with mayo, lemon juice.
- Spread them on scallops & top with cheese.
- Bake for about 10 mins or till golden brown. Serve hot!

WAH~!!!! I love Mentaiko, had once before in Singapore years ago (during a Japanese Food Fair at some shopping mall), can't really find some in Penang yet.... and 1000 yen is not expensive too!
