Many knew me as a sucker for Abalone and you can see from my dining reviews and recipes on the highly-prized mollusc. There’re so many ways to indulge in this gem, or simply cook it with porridge or even eat it with instant noodles.
But what do you when you’re feeling poor but craving for the Abalone? Well, here’s the alternative - Limpets, the poor man's Abalone.
Priced at just below S$10 a can, one can almost afford to eat this anytime. As a substitute for Abalone when I’m low on budget, I would often purchase the Fortune brand Limpets to cook Congee with it. However, my brilliant hubby thought I should try a new XXX brand and ended up disappointed.
The Limpets were teeny-weeny in size, dry and tough; very different from those in the Fortune brand. Hence, I didn’t use much for my congee. Instead decided to keep the rest until I thought of how to “deal” with the rest.
Well, look what I’ve done to the remaining Limpets! I decided to braised it instead, hoping the texture will be better and it did. The Limpets with Spinach was a marvel! Both hubby and my son were so happy to savour the “Abalone” dish.
Ingredients:
1 or ½ can of Limpets
250g Spinach
1 tbsp Cooking wine
4 -5 tbsp Cornstarch
Dash of Pepper
(A)
1-2 tbsp Oyster sauce
1 tsp minced Ginger
½ tsp Soya sauce
1 tsp Sesame oil
2 tsp Extra-virgin Olive Oil
Stock from can of Limpet
Method:
Or, if you’re feeling generous, hop over to Abundance of Joy Abalone (金鲍满屋) to make the extravagant jewel.
Or, what about Surprise Mom with A Stalk of Abalone Flower On Mother’s Day!
Do me a favour, my dearest readers. Please hop over to My Cooking, try out the Drop-down Menu and let me know what you think. Easy to navigate, encounter any hiccups etc? Thanks for taking the time and I really hope you’ll like the new change. See you there!

ReplyDeleteTina, I thought so. Seems quite a handful of non-Asian haven't tried these popular delicacies....
DeleteI am not sure on the Limpets but thats a lovely way of using it for your cooking. Very nice and love that little thick gravy inside the dish.
ReplyDeleteNava, pls do try the dish if u get the chance. Maybe chk with your godparents :)
DeleteHi Shirley,
ReplyDeleteAre you referring to the apps with Flickr and your recipes? If thats the one, yeh I quite like it too. Easy for others to get about and look for any one of the recipes.
Nava, oh yes. Thks, dear! Appreciate u getting back to me :)
DeleteI've no idea whether I've eaten it before...
ReplyDeleteAny idea what it's called in Chinese? ;)
Charmaine, direct translation: small abalone. Hahaha! U can find in all supermarts :)
Deleteerrrmmm, what's limpets? lol i think i gonna go for that since im poor enough to eat abalone! =(
ReplyDeleteHenry, seems a lot aren't familiar with Limpets. They're actually known as "small abalones". Chk with your mom.
DeleteHi Shirley, first your dish looks mouthwatering and great idea to use poor man's abalone along with the spinach and second , your new cover looks great. I like it. Been to your My Cooking , your drop down menu works well. I have about 700 recipes , so if I want to do a drop down menu , I will be dead by the time I finish doing it;)
ReplyDeleteElin, thks for getting back with your feedback! I'm delighted that u found the dishes to your appetite :) I'm already half-dead with mine, I'm sure with yours it's gonna kill! Hahaha!
DeleteHaha, what a good idea. and cheap ^.^ looks yummy ^^

ReplyDeleteFoodieFC, great to have another Abalone fan here :)
Deleteeven if it's the poor man abalone, i dont think it's cheap :) happy eating with your dearest family!
ReplyDeleteLatest: How Hot can You Take?
Fish, guess you'll find the price dearer when converted to ringgit. Lol! For abalone lovers like me, this is so much more affordable :) Have a good week ahead, dear!
DeleteWow...abalone in instant noodles? Sounds really tasty and so is this limpets dish. Didn't realize you had another blog. Will check it out :)
ReplyDeleteBiren, thks for dropping by! I can't afford the time to handle another blog. It's just another page. U can find it at the top of my tabs. Thks for checking out!
DeleteOh Shirley, you did it! I love it, neat and nice :) I thought you 讲讲而已... hahaa not easy job for you've more than 200 posts.
ReplyDeleteI love abalone very much too. Do you know how to prepare the dried abalone? Last time I tried once, it was as tough as rubber :DD
Ann, hahaha! Sorry it took so long.... Hope u like the link to your blog. Thks again! I tried cooking Dried Abalone once, but the process is too long & tiresome.
DeleteU need to soak for hours & change water in between. Then, u gotta cook it with chicken, pork or ham for at least 8-10hrs, depending on size. Many steps involved. Better eat at restaurants. Lol!
Who wouldn't love abalone! It doesn't matter if it is expensive or cheap ones. Everyone still loves it. Now, how I wish I live nearer. haha....
ReplyDeleteRegards
Kristy
p/s Actually, I went over to S'pore last weekend to attend my grandma's funeral at Bt Batok but am staying with my brother at C.C.Kang. Then rush home on Sunday. No time to do any shopping there. :o)
Kristy, yes, totally agree! Cheap or ex, I take them all. Hahaha! U're so cute! I'm so sorry to hear about your grandma. Hope all's well now. Take care!
DeleteLimpets' taste very similar to abalone? I am not sure I ate abalone or limpets before or not. Haha. My family cooked 'abalone' in CNY few years ago, but grandma told me that it was 'fake abalone'. So perhaps it's limpets?
ReplyDeleteLuPorTi, not similar of course, else no one will buy Abalones. Fake abalone selling in supermarkets are very different. They're mostly made of flour & fish paste. Limpets are much nicer in taste & texture.
DeleteI see. So, the 'fake Abalones' are even cheaper than limpets, right?
ReplyDeleteLuPorTi, yap. They're used sold in slices in vacuum-pack bags that look like Abalone slices. Limpets are mini & are whole pieces. Try it someday.
DeleteMy NO.1 favorite is abalone. When no budget for abalone, limpets also can. hahaha
ReplyDeleteVeron, we've so much in common. Hahaha!
DeleteOh I like your cooking page and those drop down menu of each category. Well done Shirley. I am sure your readers will appreciate the effort.
ReplyDeleteVeron, thks for reverting with your views & I'm glad u like it too! Enjoy your weekend, dear!
DeleteThis is a very dish for me and I am absolutely intrigued!! Though I seem to like all the other elements and flavours ;)
ReplyDeleteeasyfoodsmith, I'm glad u're into Asian food.
DeleteHi Shirley!
ReplyDeleteYour dish delicious and mouthwatering! Love the presentation as well. The first time I ever had limpets, I thought they were baby abalone. I didn't know they weren't until my grandma told me. Your sauce looks like its at the perfect consistency. I'd love to pour that over my rice and just savor every bite of it. Another wonderful dish, Shirley.
I also dropped by your My Cooking page. The OCD in me is loving how neatly everything is organized. Very easy on the eyes and easy to use. Btw, I may have accidentally pushed the send button and sent in an unfinished comment earlier. Please omit that. Hope you're doing well, my dear!
Lequan, what a surprise! I miss u, sweetie! It's so nice seeing your nice comments again & I'm really delighted that u found the drop-down menu an ease to use.
DeleteNevertheless, glad we're also connected at Draw Something. Hahaha! Funny how 2 people so far apart are playing games together. Such fun!
Yes, your new dropdown menu is easy to navigate, but, i was hoping to be able to get straight to the recipe that i wanted. It looks like you have combined a few together. Nevertheless, this kind of give me a refreshing feel when reading the post again. Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteDS, thks so much for the feedback! As the cooking page was getting more crowded with so many recipes, I thought it'll be better having a drop-down menu. Hope u'll like it :)
DeleteLimpets dish...yum :)"
ReplyDeleteEsther, thks for leaving your lovely note & it's great having u here! Hope to see more of u :)
