Ippudo, The Best Hakata Ramen (一風堂)

I prefer my Ramen with the Tonkotsu broth, a creamy texture unlike others with clear broth. Tonkotsu is the mainstream of Hakata, Japan. The broth is from an elaborated process of cooking pork bones for more than 20hrs.

Ippudo came highly recommended by my Japanese friends. But because of the long queues when it first opened its branch in S’pore, I avoided the place. Just the other day, I picked my son up from class for lunch; his school’s just opposite the Mandarin Gallery where Ippudo is located.

It was almost 2pm then, but the Japanese restaurant was still packed. Menu is simple, just a 2-page laminated piece of paper. One side’s ramen & the other, side dishes. It wasn’t difficult to choose as they’re only 3 types of Ramen: Shiromaru, Akamaru & Karaka. The ramen broth is divided by colors: Shiro (white) & Aka (red). The Karaka ramen is spicy.

Jon opted for the Akamaru Kasaneaji @ S$15, with slices of pork belly chashu. He added also added an egg for extra S$2.

We ordered a side to go with the ramen. Although price’s a little dear @ S$8 for 4 thin slices of Chashu on Hotplate, the pork was tender & delicious.

Ippudo features skinny Hakata-style ramen, with prices starting from S$15. “So, how’s the ramen?” soliciting an answer from Jon. His answer was simple, “Mum, I’m not going to Ajisen anymore”. Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

*(Ajisen Ramen, with 400 chains worldwide, is considered a "lower class" ramen by Japanese standards.)

Here’s a glimpse of Ippudo & their famous Ramen. Enjoy!

  1. Ohhh ramen, they're just yummy and filling. I just find so much comfort when I'm eating ramen. And it's raining at the moment, so this post of yours made me yearn for some haha. I've never been to Ippudo (I believe that's only in SG, right?), but this post is pretty helpful to everyone whose in the area and searching for the best place to get a nice bowl of ramen. Thanks for sharing this, Shirley!

  2. Wi,it's Friday! What a day to rain..... so u're stuck at home? Seems it's only in Japan, NY & S'pore. Perhaps when u visit S'pore next time?

  3. Yes, it's raining here as well! Sigh... what a let down. Still, I hope you're having a happy Friday. And yes, that's one of the first restos I'm going to seek and have a meal at when I visit S'pore, sure sounds like a place worthy to try.

  4. Nice food Shirley but we will simply go for the sashimi at Jap restaurants as my hubby and me cannot resist this.

  5. Nice post...You have introduced me to a new dish today...Thnx dear..

  6. Ramen with creamy sauce? Why didn't I think of that, lol?! Thanks for this great idea, Shirley.

  7. I want to get to visit you someday so you can take me to all of these great places :)
Hope your having a great week sweetie

  8. Wi, it's a great week for me!! I'm in cloud 9 :) Looking fwd to your visit, dearie!

Nava, u've good taste. I love sashimi too!

Neha, hope u get a chance to try ramen :)

Kimby, I prefer this type of soup base as it's tastier :)

Alisha, can't wait to meet u in person too!

  9. I've never been to Ajisen nor Ippudo, but have heard good things of both. Being the piggy that I am, I'd still love to try both. Teehee. Although starting at @ $15 per bowl, the price seems quite high. Then again, you can't really put a value on great food. Thanks for the review, Shirley.

  10. Lequan, wonder what kind of ramen u've got over there........ Will take u to taste some nice ones the next time u visit S'pore!

A lovely note makes a beautiful day!
