Aromatic Basil Minced Pork In Kueh Pie Tee Shells

My version of “Kueh Pie Tee”

I spotted Kueh Pie Tee shells at a supermart yesterday. Kueh Pie Tee is a popular Peranakan dish in S’pore. It’s a thin & crispy pastry shell filled with spicy & sweet mixture of vegetables & prawns.

I also found some nice Basil Leaves. Basil is not only a herb commonly used in Italian cuisine, it's also popular in Asia & especially Thailand; but of course the type of Basil used may differ.

Pad Ga-prao (Stir-fry Minced Meat with Basil Leaves) is one of the most common dishes in Thailand, using the strongly scented Basil leaves. You can cook this dish with Pork, Chicken or Beef using this recipe. This dish can also be served as a one-dish meal with rice.

With the Basil that I'd bought, I was thinking of cooking Pad Ga-prao for dinner, so I decided to try using the Kueh Pie Tee shells. What a perfect way to entertain guests, with a different touch!

300g Minced Pork
30g - 40g Thai Basil leaves
6 Kueh Pie Tee shells (optional)
2 tsp Fish sauce
½ tsp Dark Soya sauce
½ tsp Sugar
½ tsp Chilli peppers

  1. Remove stems from Basil. We’re just using the leaves. Rinse well.
  2. Sautéed garlic till fragrant. Add pork & break it up. Keep frying until pork starts to turn from pink to a uniform opaque colour.
  3. Add seasonings, sugar & chillies. Mix well & stir in basil leaves. Fry briefly & put about 2 tsp of the pork mixture into the shells & serve.

  1. What a unique way to serve the basil minced pork, Shirley. the kueh pie tee shells sound good even on it's own. a lovely dish. i don't eat pork, but hubby does and i love learning to make pork dishes for him. even if i don't eat it, i don't think he should be deprived of it either.

  2. I love pie tee Shirley, the crispy soft shells simply melts in the mouth. Its really a great recipe with pork and aromatic fragrant from basil but pork is a no no at home.

    However, am sure the meat can be replaced with what we are comfortable with and follow the rest as stated in your recipe.
