Accommodations in Ipoh and Royal Belum to Suit Every Budget

( Visit Perak 2017: 4D3N )

malaysia tourism ipoh royal belum accommodations
For travellers looking for a weekend getaway, Perak ( 霹雳 ) in Malaysia may be your idyllic retreat since it is just a short flight away from Singapore. The once sleepy mining state is slowly transforming into a thriving holiday destination and this year, Lonely Planet has listed the entire state of Perak as the 9th of 10 Top Regions in the World to visit in 2017!

Perak was one of Malaysia's wealthiest states during Malaya's colonial period. Holiday makers planning to visit the Land of Grace can fly directly to Ipoh via Firefly or Tigerair to check out tourist attractions such as the Royal Town in Kuala Kangsar, Kellie's Castle in Batu Gajah, the Art of Old Town, or head to the Lost World of Tambun theme park especially if you have kids tagging along. The city is also known for its great food, limestone mountains and caves.

For the adventurous, try jungle trekking at Royal Belum Rainforest in Gerik, one of the largest untouched forest reserves in the peninsula. Perak has a lot more to offer than you think.

During our recent Visit Perak 2017 trip, the media got to experience different categories of accommodations which I will be sharing with you in this post.

Our room's window opened out to the swimming pool on their 11th floor with views of Ipoh’s city. The room comes with coffee-tea-making facilities and standard amenities. With its convenient location and pleasant ambience with wide range of facilities, the Syeun Hotel makes an ideal accommodation for both business travellers and tourists.

Rating: 5/5
What We Like:

Attractive location with lots of makan places, massage parlours, and convenient stores within walking distance despite being late at night. Nice cosy room with easy to access free WIFI.

Downside: None. For a 4-star hotel in Malaysia, we considered this above average.

Sg Tiang Base Camp, Royal Belum

Wake up to the sounds of cicadas singing and crickets chirping. Explore the Royal Belum State Park, take a boat ride and check out the Sungai Tiang Chalet and Campsite. Royal Belum Chalet is divided into four camps and the media for this trip were put in Kem Sungai Tiang.

The VIP chalets at Sg Tiang have names using different species of fishes such as ours - Chalet Toman. To get to our chalet, we had to climb a flight of hilly steps from the jetty carrying our own luggage so make sure you travel light.

Be welcomed by floor to ceiling glass windows in this charismatic Sg Tiang VIP Chalet which extends out to a private balcony with a forest view. Setting is simple for the VIP Chalet which comes with a Queen-size bed, a single mattress, small private toilet, a ceiling fan, and a wardrobe.

The scenery out there overlooking Lake Temenggor is fascinating. Campers can relax at the campsite or enjoy water sports like Kayaking. It is a charming resort with lots of potential and we love the floor to ceiling windows filling the room with natural lights in our chalet. Despite having no air conditioning, the room was rather comfortable with the ceiling fan. Hubby and I were really glad to have clean bedsheets, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Kem Sungai Tiang offers campers various options of chalets such as these cute tent-like accommodation.

Downside:
Although insects are part and parcel of the wildness, we certainly did not expect our room to be infested with mosquitoes. Thankfully, I bought a can of insecticide just the night before in Ipoh and we could use it to spray our room. Couple of others also borrowed my insecticide after learning I had one.

Sadly, our room was dusty and the floor underneath the bed was extremely dirty. I had a new tube of NUXE Reve de Miel Face and Body Ultra-Rich Cleansing Gel, but I accidentally dropped the cap while I was opening it. The cap rolled under the bed, so I had to get Ken to pick it up for me; I didn’t dare to look under the bed. Hubby took a look and said, “Forget it, dear.” I was stunned at his reply. He paused and continued, “Don’t bother if it is not very expensive.” “But it is new, and it is my favourite Nuxe!” I begged. Ken then asked me to see for myself and declared “ safe “ for viewing. I reluctantly bent down and stared in disbelief – the floor under the bed was full of dust and litters! It was like the housekeepers swept all the litters under the bed for a quick room makeup. LOL!

Though air fresheners were provided in the room, there was a strong stench coming from our toilet which wouldn’t go away. Also, our toilet and doorway lights were down. The staff tried to change the light bulbs, but unfortunately they wouldn’t fit and brought us torchlight instead. I did not dare to close the toilet door during our overnight stay, and my poor hubby had to stand outside each time I visit. It was pitched dark inside, plus with the torch light’s reflection on the mirror, it was real scary.

Honestly, I would have given it 5 stars if not for the cleanliness. It is such a pity cause the place is so charismatic. I really hope the management could step up on the house keeping and make Sungai Tiang a more attractive spot for travellers to stay.

Tip:
  • Bring your own towels and toiletries.
  • Carry a bottle of insect repellent and a can of insecticide.

Arus Belum Houseboat

If you are the thrill seekers, go Houseboating instead. Houseboats are basically boats that have been designed or modified to be used primarily as a home, and these accommodations in Perak are modest in budget. Houseboats provide a unique experience of living on the water, and packages usually include meals and land activities.

The drive from Ipoh to Hentian Royal Belum Amanjaya Jetty is approximately 2.5 hours. There, visitors may see couple of Houseboats docking at the jetty. We boarded one of the houseboats operated by Arus Belum.

These boats have a kitchen where staff will prepare your meals. The toilets are shared and showers do not have hot water and toiletries, just like the chalets.

Although we did not get to sleep in the houseboat, our meals were practically prepared by the staff there during our stay at Royal Belum Rainforest. There is a huge dining table in our houseboat where everyone could get together for a decent meal. Food served were tasty; way better than expected.

Rooms and kitchen appeared clean. Staff are friendly and cheerful. Even though the two toilets were always wet, slippers were provided for usage.

Downside:
None, though may not be suitable for those with motion sickness.

Spanking clean rooms with comfortable beds and air-conditioning. Offering complete relaxation and the chance to get close to nature, Belum Rainforest Resort is a heavenly retreat in the rainforest especially with their infinity edge pool offering unimpeded views.

luxury royal belum rainforest resort buggy
We also like having the idea of a buggy fetching us from door to door within the resort, and of course, not forgetting their Puteri Dewi Spa to soothe our aching body.

Downside:
WIFI was weak in the lobby area and restaurant, and there was completely no WIFI in few of our rooms. We called the reception to check, and the staff said they would send someone over to fix. 15 minutes past and no one came. Subsequently, we made another 2 calls to check and they assured us a tech guy was coming over, but to no avail.

We could have given Belum Rainforest Resort a full score if not for the WIFI hiccups and unhelpful staff, except for the buggy boys which we were more than happy to tip them. Both the front desk and housekeeping staff could have just inform us that their rooms have no WIFI being in the rainforest and I am sure guests can totally understand, instead of repeatedly telling us a tech guy would be there to fix but no one assist at all. We had wasted so much time just waiting for them to turn up.
