Budapest Danube River Cruise, Central Market Hall Shopping

budapest danube river cruise hungarian parliament
Eastern Europe Day 2: As the sky turns dark at 4.30pm in winter, evenings in Hungary are characterized by enchanting illuminated sights. One way to marvel at the grace of Budapest is going on a sightseeing cruise along Danube River, which I will be highlighting at the end of this post. This city, packed with fortifications and buildings from Roman times will fascinate you.

Budapest Great Market Hall aka Central Market Hall is located at the Pest side near the City Centre. Striking Zsolnay tiles lay over the massive roof structure, making the three-storey market the most spectacular element of the building from afar.

Be it rain or shine, the Central Market Hall is one of the most visited tourist attractions. It is centrally located in the city center just at the end of Vaci Utca. This is the place to buy Hungarian souvenirs, beautiful handmade porcelain clocks like these, or traditional food home for your family and friends.

Here, you can find Hungarian wines, exotic spices, sausage and ham, plus lots of souvenirs. You will go gaga over their wide variety of Hungarian embroidery like table linens, and their arts and crafts. * Note: Central Market Hall is closed on Sundays.

hungary famous dessert wine tokaji aszu hungarian paprika
Hungarian Paprika and Tokaji wines are some of the recommended local products to buy. Paprika is a spice made from air-dried fruits of the chili pepper family, and it is the secret ingredient to all of Hungarian traditional dishes. Hungary's most famous dessert wine is Tokaji Aszu, the legendary sweet elixir. This is a sweet dessert wine from Hungary’s famous wine region, Tokaj.

The Hungarian currency is the Forint. Although Hungary is part of the European Union, it does not use the Euro as its currency. Be sure to take some cash with you to cover your trip, as most businesses there are still largely cash-based. Except for touristy attractions, I found many items cost less in Hungary than in Western Europe.

budapest shopping andrassy avenue souvenirs
Budapest's most famous street Vaci utca ( Vaci Street ) is where you will find more Hungarian souvenirs, located in the District V with neighboring streets like Fashion Street housing brand names like Hugo Boss and Max Mara. The walk from Central Market Hall to Vaci Street is about 20 minutes. If you are suffering from jet lag or tired after a day of walking, you can easily spot some Thai Massage outlets in the area. My travel buddy and I went for a 60-minute aromatherapy massage for 35€. Definitely a good place to stretch and relax after so much walking.

budapest world heritage site andrassy avenue designer shopping
Recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2002, the Andrassy ut ( Andrassy Avenue ) is one of Budapest's main shopping streets lined with fine cafes, restaurants, theatres, and carries some of the upscale boutiques like Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Gucci. This Avenue is an elegant 2.5 km long tree-lined street that covers the distance from Deak Ferenc ter to the Heroes Square.

hungarian golden goose liver pate foie gras
When visiting Hungary, one of the must-buy items is Foie Gras. The goose liver pate is one of the best known gourmet products of Hungary. Although most people know only the French goose liver which is the Foie Gras, the Hungarian goose liver producing and eating has a much longer history than the French.

There are many grades of foie gras, look for the best which is the Golden Label containing 99% goose liver. The Golden Goose Liver is the only goose liver which is made without force-feeding, which means the geese eat and live the natural way.
