Makan Kitchen Battle Of The Ovens At DoubleTree Johor Bahru!

Johor Bahru has always been a popular food hunt destination especially for Singaporean foodies due to its proximity which is just across the causeway.

Within walking distance from the spanking City Square Shopping Mall in JB lies Makan Kitchen, a roomy all-day dining restaurant located on the ground level of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru. Be tantalized by the kaleidoscope of colours at this eatery, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Every Saturday this month, dinners can savour local specialties from Makan Kitchen's Chinese and Indian Ovens at their Battle Of The Ovens!

At the weekly makan event, chefs from both the Chinese and Indian Kitchens will be competing against each other, whipping up culinary delights to satisfy your hunger pangs.

My Thoughts:
Restaurant: Chic with modern design, the clean and spacious hall is probably one of the biggest buffet restaurants I've ever visited in my travels. My family has dined at Makan Kitchen on couple of occasions during our " staycations " at DoubleTree JB. But this time, we had the chance to dine in their private room as the dining hall was quite noisy due to the weekend crowd. Complete with white table linen and elegant settings along with a cozy ambience is what you'll find in their private rooms.

Service: The staff at Makan Kitchen is passionate and genuine in what they do, and you can see from their friendly and cheerful attitude. Tables were promptly cleared and food recommendations came in from both the chefs and servers.  It was attention at its best!

Food: I kinda like the idea of a juice bar where I can have freshly-squeezed juices at the beck of my call. Overall, the food was relatively tasty featuring live cooking stations though not everything succeeded.

makan kitchen baked seafood coconut cheese review
The Baked Seafood with Coconut and Cheese got me excited initially, but it didn't turn out as I had envisaged. The dish was nothing but sweet, and I could hardly taste the coconut.

makan kitchen dinner buffet flower crabs review
The flower crabs from both the sashimi section and the Chinese Kitchen were a disappointment too. The crab meat was mushy and somehow lacked the subtle taste and texture. The Baked Crab with Homemade Kam Heong Sauce was also too sweet for our liking.

makan kitchen dinner buffet double boiled soups
One of the noteworthy dishes is the Double-boiled Soup. The tasty and rich stock was oozing with flavours arising from the chicken, cuttlefish, and the sweetness from the cabbage and wolfberries. I was told the double-boiled soups are very popular among their diners, and I'm not surprised at all. My hubby drank 2 bowls, and I had 3 all to myself!

Other dishes worth mentioning are the Roast Duck and Chicken which were well executed, and I love the fragrant and tender charred meat!

doubletree johor bahru makan kitchen udang sambal review
My family aren't exactly a fan of buffet, so we only sampled some dishes. I thought the Udang Sambal wasn't too bad either with its rich and savoury sauce.

doubletree johor bahru makan kitchen indian garlic nan
My hubby and son really liked the Nan with Garlic which was flavourful and nicely charred.

doubletree johor bahru makan kitchen herbal chicken review
We kinda enjoyed the Braised Chicken with Herbs too. The meat was tender and I love the aroma from the Tang Gui or Wild Angelica herbs. Definitely a healthy choice for diners!

  20. I've just seen your mahjong agar agar cake. Looks interesting. May I know how you get the tiles to stay in position while transporting the cake from one place to another?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wendy, apology for my tardy response as I've been busy with events. To get the tiles in place, simply put toothpicks in between & that should work pretty well. If you're using my recipe, do send me your food pix & I'll display it in our readers' corner in Facebook :D
