Whether you are a traveller looking to Eat, Tour, or have Activities Withlocals, or someone who take pleasure in hosting someone from another country, WithLocals has it all! Well, my Withlocals mission is dining with a local host! Let's check out how easy it is to navigate the site:

Once you're at Withlocals, you'll be greeted with a welcoming option to select where you wanna go and whether you would like to be a Guest or Host. I opted for Singapore and I wanna be a Guest! You can either sign in manually or via your Facebook account.

I went on to select my host, which is an Indonesian family who has been living in Singapore for the past 5 years. You can also see the pricing in Euros, with the option to view in different currencies.

When you've chosen your host, you can view their details and reviews, if any. If you're comfortable with your choice, you can contact your host if you've any personalized request.

I buzzed my host, Sally Ng, and asked her what kind of dishes are available. She quoted me 45€ (SGD 77.26 incl admin fee) for 2 pax with the list of options above. Once I've selected the date and made my payment, we were set to go! Check out Sally's cooking:

A loving family with two adorable kids aged 4 and 1, Sally and Robert made us feel very welcome. Hubby and I spent about 2 hrs at their Ang Mo Kio flat getting to know the Indonesian family. Sally cooked reasonably well, and I'm sure if you're a tourist wanting to get a taste of local food, you'll enjoy dining with this family.

As locals, we may find 45€ rather steep. For almost SGD 80, most would rather enjoy good food at a restaurant. But as tourists, the price you're forking out includes learning about other cultures and making friends with people from another country. The experience could be invaluable and memorable.

My concern: Hubby and I found the place too hot, which left us rather uncomfortable. As much as we had enjoyed chatting with the family, the heat was turning us away. I'm sure the guests would feel even more at home and relaxed if the flat is cooler since the weather in Singapore can be unbearable at times. Perhaps turning on the air-con could be an option, or putting the fan on a higher speed...

Nonetheless, the husband and wife couple are very nice and friendly people. We had a wonderful time there and it was certainly a pleasure getting to know Sally and her family as well as trying out her cooking.

Thanks so much Withlocals, for the wonderful experience, and thank you Sally/Robert, for hosting us!

Do you have such an experience overseas? What do you think of this concept of Eating, Touring, and having Activities with a local host? How about you being a host yourself? If you're travelling to Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, do check out Withlocals for an awesome adventure!

  20. Wow! This is something new to me!

I have traveled a lot during the last 2 years and this concept of locals is a nice change for me to consider.
When I visited Angkor Wat many years ago, I hired a tour guide/driver online and he did a very good job showing me around. He liked me & wife so much that he offered to bring me to his house for traditional dinner. I was so happy until today to think of the opportunity to see their house built on very high stilts with loose bamboo flooring where you might see wild & stray animals below. The 4-Star hotel I booked treated me like a Prince but I liked the "Locals" experience to eat their home cooking & observe their lifestyle.
