Absinthe, A French Affair For Our 23rd Wedding Anniversary!

absinthe restaurant francais singapore wedding anniversary
Have you heard of the "Green Fairy", named Absinthe? For those who haven’t, it’s an anise-flavoured spirit that’s normally diluted with water prior to being consumed. #Absinthe it is, but I’m referring to a modish Restaurant Francais tucked right in the business district along Boat Quay. It's our 23rd Wedding Anniversary, & we had such a lovely celebration at this French eatery!

Chill out at Absinthe’s Seafood Bar after a hard day’s work; have a booze from their extensive selection of reasonably priced wines covering not only most of France wine producing regions, but as well a fair representation of others countries.

For a casual evening, be greeted by the restaurant’s Al Fresco dining along the Singapore's riverside.

If you prefer to have a quiet corner, their serveur will be happy to whiz you up to their upper floors for a more romantic seating. The elegant dining room is artfully decorated in warm yellow lightings, & simple affordable menu is what you’ll find at Absinthe.

Chef Francois' cuisine is deeply rooted in the French heritage, influenced by his younger years in the South West Region; he shows a respect for the produces he uses; enhancing them rather than merely blending them together. Let’s check out what Chef Francois had prepared for our anniversary!

Our first course was the #Ceviche of Hokkaido Scallops (SGD 26) in ponzu dressing, & served with pear & pomegranate. A truly light & hearty appetizer opening our appetite for more coming up.

Next starter that Chef Francois had for us was the Creamy Lobster Bisque (SGD 15). Reasonably priced, the tasty traditional #LobsterBisque was nicely scented with cognac, although we would prefer a much richer & thicker texture.

absinthe restaurant francais foie gras review
Foie Gras is something you just can’t do without in a French eatery. Vinvent Jaureguiberry, the polite & attentive restaurant manager, had also arranged for my family a generous portion of Foie Gras Poêlé (SGD $29). * Serving may differ since the portion prepared was for three of us. This delicacy was pan-seared till crispy on the exterior, & paired with warm blinis & morello cherries. My son, Jonathan, is a huge fan of #FoieGras; he probably had more than his fair share of the gourmet liver.

If you prefer to have a light main course, the Cabillaud (SGD 46) is a must-try. The Roasted Black Cod glided easily into our mouths, & the Prawn Risotto & Kaffir Lime Leaf Emulsion was a delightful touch. It was one of my favourite dishes that evening.

Another superb option for something heavier would be the Braised Wagyu Beef Cheeks (SGD 40). The melt-in-your-mouth #wagyu is slow-cooked in red wine, & wonderfully married with creamy mash. Thumbs-up to this mouth-watering dish!

Finishing off our anniversary dinner was a Tarte du Jour (SGD 14) with Vanilla Ice Cream. The intensely aromatic coffee tart is a must-try, making it a stunning dessert entrance!

We were also served the Earl Grey Crème Brulée (SGD 15), which is one of the best we’ve ever tasted. The decadent dessert was accompanied by Hazelnut Sugar & Yuzu Jelly, creating a good balance in both taste & texture.

Wines for the night:
  • White - 2011 #PaulJaboulet Aine Viognier Secret de Famille, Rhone, France. #Viognier is an aromatic grape variety known for producing textural white wines with strong stone-fruit flavors.
  • Red - 2011 #LionelOsmin & Co., Cahors, Malbec, Cohors, France

If you’re looking for a decent French meal without burning a hole in your pocket, Absinthe is one place to try. Although service was slow that nite, which could be due to full seating, the dining hall staff remained calm & professional, & were cheerful. Not to mention Vincent, who took good care of us the entire evening.

When leaving the restaurant, words like “Speedy recovery”, “Take care, young man” warmed our hearts. Though they were just few liners, but these are simple gestures that showed the unpretentious side of the servers. If you’re wondering what a nice tie Jon had that evening, it’s actually his arm sling. Those following me on Facebook would’ve known about his accident in Vietnam. He was hit by a motorbike while crossing the busy road in Ho Chin Minh City, & suffered a broken collar bone. Just wanna put a note to thank you each & every one of you for your care & concern!

  15. Shirley, Happy Anniversary to you & your hubby and speedy recovery to your son. (Clever "sling!") Your meal sounded fantastic, but yes, I wondered, too at soup labeled a bisque when you could see the bottom of the bowl! The rest of the dishes more than made up for that, though... I was wishing I could taste your Cabillaud and also the coffee tarte. So glad you had a lovely celebration!

    1. Kim, the bisque wasn't exactly that light; could be the reflection from the light. Hahaha! But that's a good one.Yap, we've certainly enjoyed the food & company overall. Perhaps one day.... when you can make a trip to Asia :) Thks dear, have a lovely weekend!
