OSO Ristorante, The Essence Of Italian Food

Homage to traditional Italian cooking is OSO Ristorante, an upmarket fine dining snuggled right in the #Chinatown district at Bukit Pasoh.

Sitting just next to the Majestic Hotel is a traditional 3-storey 15,000 sq ft heritage shophouse with Hashi Japanese Restaurant being on the ground floor, & #OSO occupying the 2nd & 3rd levels.

If you’re familiar with the T.R.E Group, you’ll know that both #Hashi & Oso join the team of their other restaurants – #Absinthe Restaurant Francais at Boat Quay, & #Gaia Ristorante & Bar at Goodwood Park Hotel.

dbs masterclass chef diego chairini
Having met the charismatic Chef Diego Chiarini the first time during my DBS Masterclass At AFC Studio, I was truly delighted to receive an invitation from the int'l award-winning chef to dine at his Italian restaurant after we met for the 2nd time during the #RestaurantWeek!

The lighted-stairs led us up to the cosy OSO Ristorante. What we thought to be a comfortable–sized dining hall turned out to be much bigger than we’d imagined.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh singapore al fresco dining
As my family had arrived early, we went on a mini tour & were brought outside to the balcony area. The Al Fresco dining seats approx 30 pax, with views overlooking the Majestic Hotel & rows of shophouses. If you enjoy blue skies & warm breezes, the charming balcony with intimate surroundings is the place for you.

Soon, we were greeted by the busy Chef Diego, who had kindly prepared a customized menu for my family. We were also introduced to his partner, Stephane Colleoni, who is responsible for the daily operations at #OSORistorante.

Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve @ SGD 22/flute were served with freshly-baked in-house bread.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh spider crab granchio salad
That evening’s dinner kicked off with 3 different starters. It was a love-at-first-sight for this visually exquisite Spider Crab “Granchio” Meat @ SGD 22. The seafood was plated beautifully with mixed vegetables tartar “Venezia” style with its natural sweetness nicely balanced. A simple, but dazzling appetizer.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh puglia burrata cheese
The moment I cut through the Burrata Cheese, it was like a hot knife slicing through butter with the creamy milk oozing out. I could instantly tell by the perfect thickness of this cheese that it was the freshest in all the land. The daily-made Puglia “Burrata” Cheese with Tomato Sabayon “for 2” is priced @ SGD 38.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh cured lean beef bresaola
My pick had to be the Homemade Cured Lean Beef “Bresaola” @ SGD 24. Unlike Beef Carpaccio which is a dish of raw meat, these deeply-flavoured cured beef are actually air-dried, salted meat that has been aged for a couple of months. Well, you can never go wrong pairing these wafer-thin beef with shaved Parmigiano & Wild Rucola.

oso ristorante angel hair gambretti shrimps pasta
Next on our table were twin pastas.  Stephan had arranged for us the Pinot Grigio @ SGD 15/glass as we preferred white for the evening. The Angel Hair “Capelli d’Angelo” was accented by Gambretti Red Baby Shrimps. Price not available at time of publish; not in Ala Carte menu. A simple pasta dish, nothing to shout about as I've tasted much better ones.

oso ristorante black truffle tartufo risotto review
While we were not too impressed with the Angel Hair Pasta, OSO’s Black Truffle “Tartufo” Risotto & Mascarpone Cheese @ SGD 26 totally swept us off our feet! The Truffle Risotto suffused with rich stock is an example of how cooking does not have to be complex to be enjoyable.

* Note: As this is a specially-crafted menu for my family, the Truffle Rissoto in their Ala Carte menu doesn’t come with truffle shavings. If you don’t already know, the King of all Fungi is notoriously pricey. My family enjoyed the rissoto very much & only have one complaint - we couldn't get enough!

oso ristorante italian dining bukit pasoh braised oxtail
Another triumph was the 8-hr perfectly cooked Slowed Braised Oxtail @ SGD 35. This was another dish not in their menu. The succulent oxtail meat tore apart easily with just a gentle lift from the fork; fabulous pairing with their pumpkin purée.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh beef tenderloin filetto truffle
Should the Oxtail fail to ignite your appetite, the mouth-watering Roasted Beef Tenderloin “Filetto” with Sabayon @ SGD 48 is a lovely rendition of a classic dish. The beef is 200 days grain fed & served with crunchy asparagus & truffle puree. The tender beef is extremely flavourful with the sabayon, & the earthiness of the truffle puree made it even more irresistible.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh cod fillet merluzzo
Another light & hearty dish was the Roasted Cod Fillet “Merluzzo” in Balsamico Sauce with Rosemary Potato @ SGD 35. There were a few bones pulled out from the fillet. A rating of 5 over 5 would be given if the fillet had been carefully deboned.

oso ristorante panna cotta, chocolate mousse, carrot cake, ameretto
Our meal concluded with a fanciful display of desserts. OSO’s simple presentation belies tasteful technique as seen in a palette of desserts with four different textures - Panna Cotta in Black Pepper Caramel Sauce, Chocolate Mousse, Carrot cake, & Ameretto Dessert. The Carrot Cake topped with a scoop of refreshing ginger sherbet is a must-try!

I love how Chef Diego had meticulously planned our menu with a different variety of dishes for each course so that the three of us could share & get to sample his opera d'arte. It seems that OSO is doing a good job satisfying the appetites of diners as the restaurant was packed even on a Thursday evening.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh singapore private rooms
OSO Ristorante has 3 chic private rooms elegantly designed for all coporate /informal events. Two of these rooms are named after a prominent wine & champagne - #AZELIA & #BillecartSalmon.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh singapore wine cellar
There’s also a Wine Room that sits 6-10 guests, boasting an extensive wine selection.

oso ristorante bukit pasoh truffle cheese cold cuts
OSO has a Cheese Room that’s marked as its first of its kind in Singapore. Traditional cold cuts are also displayed in this glass covered climate-controlled cheese room. Spotted my favourite #Truffles too, making my knees weak!

Combining authentic Italian cuisine with fine wine & cheese, plus stellar service, care & attention were put into every aspect of dining experience despite the busy hours.  We also noticed that quite a handful were regular diners, & the dining hall staff greeted them like old friends. Complete with welcoming staff, their service was as refined as their sparkling glassware. Rating: ★★★★☆

  1. You sure have a sumptuous dinner there. What surprised me is that from the exterior, the restaurant didn't look that big to be able to hold a wine room and a cheese room. Very impressive indeed!

  9. Oh you lucky "girl" Shirley. And what a lovely family you have too. How wonderful that they got to enjoy all these delicious looking dishes with you in such style.

The style of Italian cooking is from a different area of Italy than I'm familiar with but I have both eaten and prepared Bresaola before and when done slowly and properly, it is truly delicious. The inclusion of a wine and cheese bar is a huge plus. Too bad about the bones though.

Thank you so much for letting us "tag" along Shirley...
