sizzling woks famous kitchen sembawang
For those who were faithfully watching the Channel 8 Chinese TV series of Sizzling Woks (煮炒来咯) previously, you may have come across this Famous Kitchen.

Stepped into this Chinese restaurant located in Sembawang Road, you'll be greeted with snapshots of celebrities.

Recognize any familiar faces?  If you like to go star-hunting, this is one of those places that our local celebrities hang out at. That evening, seated at the table just next to us were some artistes from Channel 8, including the popular actress Ann Kok. How cool is that!

sembawang famous kitchen street directory
A total of 4 bloggers were invited for a food-tasting session, together with staff of StreetDirectory.com. Standing behind are the lovely & entertaining restaurant owners, Jenny & Jeffrey Foo.

Our Menu:
famous kitchen coconut spiced prawns
Coconut Spiced Prawns (椰辣虾) - The flavourful Chilli-style Prawns is quite similar to those dried curry dishes. If you enjoy spicy food, this one is for you!

famous kitchen kangkong
Shrimp Paste KangKong - If you're a Sambal Belchan fan like me, you may find this vegetable lacked punch. Few of us found it too bland. The owner of the restaurant explained that if too much Shrimp Paste is added, the dish may be too salty.

famous kitchen steamed fish
Sour Vegetables Fish (酸菜蒸鱼) - The Tiger Grouper is one of the restaurant best-selling dishes. Fish is steamed till 80% cooked, then placed onto a burner so that the meat is just nice when served. Accompanying the fish are Sour Vegetables, Roast Pork & some crunchy Peanuts. I tried the sauce & I like it; best to go with a bowl of fragrant rice. I rarely touch fish, but few who tried mentioned that while the flesh was nice & tender, the skin was quite fishy.

What I like about the owner of the restaurant is that he gave his honest views on the food served. When Jeffrey asked for our opinions on the dishes served, he added that two dishes didn't quite make the cut that evening (Spare Ribs & Lobster Beehoon), which I'll fill it in the respective dishes below. The boss had since given feedback to his Chef. I must salute him for that!

famous kitchen spare ribs
Plum Sauce Spare Ribs (梅汁排骨) - Although the taste was pretty good, I've to admit the meat was a tad dry as the boss had noted just by looking at the meat. I've to take my hats off to him.

famous kitchen black pepper crabs
Black Pepper Crab (黑胡椒螃蟹) - The boss had highlighted that the black pepper used here is of the highest quality, only 6% production in the world. So you're a big fan of Black Pepper Crabs, you should try this to see the difference.

famous kitchen hokkien mee
KL Flat Hokkien Mee (福建大条面) S$6/S$9/S$12 - I love lard but the taste of the fats was too overpowering. This dish will appeal to those with a heavier palate.

Highly Recommended Dishes:

famous kitchen pumpkin chicken
Pumpkin Chicken (南瓜鸡) - The Chicken Cutlets were deep-fried to perfection & drenched in tasty Pumpkin Sauce. Interestingly, the dish was topped with some crispy shredded Cuttlefish.

famous-kitchen-kampong-crystal-chicken
Crystal Chicken (水晶鸡) S$18/S$36 - Although the meat wasn't as tender as it should be, I must commend that it was still one of the best I've ever tasted due to its unique sauce. It looks like your normal plate of Hainanese Chicken, but don't be fooled. This Kampong Chicken is one of the restaurant's Signature dishes & a must-try!

famous kitchen lobster beehoon
Lobster Beehoon (龙虾米粉) - Another must-try dish is their Lobster Beehoon. The boss felt that the Beehoon given to us was too much & that could affect the taste of the dish.

sembawang famous kitchen lobster beehoon
Nevertheless, both the shellfish & the vermicelli were well executed; lobster was juicy & the saucy noodles brought out the sweetness of the crustacean. Thumbs-up!

famous kitchen salted baked flower crabs
Salted Baked Flower Crab (盐焗花蟹) S$36/kg - I'm not exactly into Flower Crabs, but a high rating should be given to this dish. I've never tasted shellfish cooked in this manner. It's definitely finger-licking good!  It takes about 25 - 30 mins to bake these Crabs, imported from Indonesia. The owner explained that Woks used for baking these crabs need to be changed monthly!

famous kitchen mango pudding
Mango Pudding (芒果布丁) S$3 - Although the dessert lacks presentation as it was served in a plastic container, it was one of the best Mango Puddings I've ever eaten. Love the consistency coupled with the sourish mango. Point to note: The Chef uses fresh mangoes every day to make the pudding.

famous kitchen yam paste ginkgo nuts
Yam Paste with Ginkgo Nuts (芋泥白果) S$18/S$25 - Although I'm a Teochew, I haven't gotten to appreciate this traditional creamy dessert as it's really sweet. There were fans at our table who tried to get couple of us to eat it, assuring us that it wasn't as sweet. We fell into their trap! No lah, still too sweet! Hahaha! I've reconfirmed that Yam Paste is certainly not for me. Nevertheless, those who'd tasted this dish liked it, adding that it wasn't as oily compared to some.

famous kitchen vip card
At the end of the dinner, the wonderful hosts surprised us with a VIP card each.  We were handed forms to fill in our particulars & now we're officially their VIPs!

    1. Kathy, hahaha! U're so adorable. As with other restaurants, seafood are always at market prices. As some of the dishes are not in the menu, we don't have the pricing but they're pretty reasonable.

    1. Balvinder, I love mango pudding too! It's such a unique dish that can hardly be found in restaurants. Meat is sweet & people like to add it in Steamboat. I'm sure u can get it in Chinatown.

    3. FoodieFC, the Kangkong with shrimp paste is not in the menu that's why I didn't put the price. As for the lobster bee hoon, it's market price as with other seafood. Some of the food featured here are not in the menu so u've to check with the staff if u wanna order them. Happy feasting!

  17. So happy to read this blog and realise you are so "true" in your comment. Not like others who will just talk about the good. I been to this restaurant twice, their food is quite saltish. Few dishes you mention I totally agreed. KL hokkien mee the lard was over-power, salted veg for the steam fish is too saltish.
