If Yan Can Cook, So Can You!

Are you familiar with the above tagline, " If Yan can cook, so can you?"  Aficionadas of the magnificent Master Chef Yan would certainly recall his other trademark, chopping food crazily with a sharp cleaver while grinning to camera, eliciting a round of rapturous applause from the largely American audience in the "Yan Can Cook" series shown widely on public television in the US.

I was ecstatic when I was invited for the Autumn Treasures with Martin Yan Cooking Demonstration at the AFC Studio. I recalled tuning in to "Yan Can Cook" programme when I was young, watching his cooking, but could only envy those audience in his studio. I would sit beside my mom, who's also a great fan of his, laughing at his witty jokes & chopping skills.

For decades, Chef Yan has captivated the audience around the world with the art of Chinese cooking. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to watch him cook live in front of me! Yes, practically right in front of me, with just a table separating us.

The Master Chef cooking show was extra-ordinary, like no others I've seen. The media invite was intimate, with just 4 bloggers & 2 from the PR agencies. Oh, Singaporean actor, gourmet, entrepreneur & comedian Moses Lim had been invited to the event too. I used to follow the sitcom "Under One Roof", where Moses played the Tan Ah Teck character. It was a pleasure meeting him at the event too.

Let's take a look at what we had learnt at Chef Yan's cooking show:

Culinary Maestro Chef at the AFC Studio impressed the media with his cutting & chopping skills. He even taught us the art of plating! I love how he dexterously cut up the cucumber so thinly & neatly arranged them on a plate, & then transformed another piece into a flower! Chef Yan also showed us how to debone a chicken in 18 secs!!

The Celebrity Chef continued to enlighten us with cooking tips & experiences on how to recreate restaurant-style dishes in the comfort of your own home!

Chef Yan's show was soulful & the audience could easily connect with him.  Readers who're following my blog would know that I love to cook too, so I was ogling & listening intensely. The food-tasting session was awesome & I learnt a great deal from this cooking demo too. I'll be back with the recipes soon!

  9. I am so jealous of you right now.. But I am really happy that you met with him. I grew up hooked to the cooking show of Yan can cook, his knife skills were the most entertaining part of the show. I was very young to understand what he was cooking, yet we were glued to the TV sets. Still remember the way he whipped the cream in his copper Bowl with a whisk.
