Up Close & Personal with Food Network Asia’s Pat & Gina Neely

Running some of Tennessee’s most successful family-run barbecue restaurants, Pat & Gina Neely, who're known for their barbecue & down home Southern-style cooking, were in town last week.

Guess what? I was invited to an exclusive media lunch "Down Home With The Neelys", with Food Network Asia’s highest-rated hosts Pat & Gina Neely, at the Four Seasons Singapore!

The King & Queen of Barbecue, Pat & Gina Neely, return to Food Network Asia this August for season 4 of Down Home with the Neelys. To promote the premiere of the new season, the Neelys were in Singapore as part of an Asian tour, where they shared the secrets behind their devilishly delicious creations with the media.

Pat & Gina donning the aprons that Food Network had provided for them, getting ready to "feed" the audience.

It was indeed an afternoon of fun & laughter as the high school sweethearts did what they do best & play host, putting together Kebabs & creating sauces from scratch, right before our very eyes.

When the Chef of Four Seasons Singapore appeared to bring in the Kebabs, Pat cheerfully posted us a question which all of us were dumbfounded, "What's the difference between a Chef & a Cook?" Foodies, give it a thought. I'll reveal the answer once you've finished reading this post.

The event was utterly hilarious with the witty Neelys & there was never a dull moment during the food demo. The American couple hit the right note & bonded really well with the audience. Soon, the buffet began......

The spread of buffet was sumptuous, including the 3 Kebabs that the Neelys had introduced earlier: Chicken & Pineapple with Honey Orange Glaze, Steak with Yogurt Dipping Sauce & Sweet & Sour Shrimps Kebab.

Here's my share of Neelys' Kebabs with their original BBQ Sauce. It's interesting to use Yogurt mix for the Beef Kebab, which has a tinge of sourness & Mediterranean flavours from the spices. The Prawns were skewered together with lime, & went well with the Sweet & Sour sauce the Neelys paired with. I like the Chicken best, with its meat all juicy & tender. The Honey Orange Glaze + the slightly charred Pineapples gave an added edge to the succulent white meat.

The entire event was immensely entertaining. Pat & Gina are funny & down to earth; I couldn't smell a single hint of snobbishness. There were 4 tables, mainly made up of editors from various publishers. All of us had a good time listening to the Neelys relating how they're relaxing at their home in Memphis, creating tasty dishes that the whole family can enjoy. Pat & Gina are truly an enchanting couple.

Here's a shot of the BBQ King & Queen, visiting Singapore's famous hawker centre "Newton Circus" the following evening for some local fare. The food expedition was attended by just a few bloggers, led by the organizing team.

All hot & sweaty, here's the loving couple enjoying our local Tiger Beer.

So, back to my question. "What's the difference between a Chef & a Cook?" The amusing Pat caught hold of the Four Seasons' Chef & gave the audience the triva. Well, the difference is..........

A Chef wears a hat, but a Cook doesn't! Lol! With that, Pat took the Chef's hat & put it on to try. Pat looks so cute, doesn't he??

Then it was Gina's turn having fun with the Chef's hat! The lovely couple has so much energy & chemistry between them. It was really fun watching the Neely's in real life.

Since the show first premiered on Food Network US in February 2008, it continues to be one of the network’s highest-rated shows. Mr. Hud Woodle, General Manager, Food Network Asia, said: “Over the years, the Neelys’ dynamic personalities & back-to-basics approach to cooking have earned them a dedicated following & they continue to be one of the network’s top TV personalities. Having been extremely well-received in Asia, we are delighted to host them in Singapore & we are happy to announce that viewers can look forward to even more fun & delicious moments in the Neelys’ kitchen when the new season premieres in August.”

Over the new season’s 13 episodes, the Neelys will concoct menus that satisfy the soul: From a four-course comfort food feast to ‘slimmer’ meals that pack a healthy punch to classics with a twist, Pat & Gina will show viewers how easy it is to make things sizzle in their own kitchens.

Down Home with the Neelys Season 4 premieres on Tuesday, 7 August at 2000 hrs (SIN/HK) on StarHub SD Channel 433 & HD Channel 468 & screens new episodes every Tuesday. Be sure to catch them in action!

Thank you Food Network Asia, for the entertaining food tasting event!

  8. Shirley, what fun to "see" you enjoying this event and what an honor for you to be there. (Which speaks well of your influence in the cooking community!) The Neelys are popular here, too -- good Southern cookin'. And it's so nice to see a couple who are obviously delighted with each other, in the kitchen and out! I never know what to expect when I open your blog... you're always up to somethin' interesting. :) Love it!
