Sedap Peranakan Cuisine At Restoran Atlantic 1

Good Lord, I've never tasted such a delicious Prawn Curry in my entire life & I'm not exaggerating. When Doris tried the Udang Lemak Nenas (Market Price), she turned to me instantly & said, "I think you're gonna love this!" And she was right! It was sooooooooo good!

melaka restoran atlantic 1 udang lemak nenas
The claypot dish was rich & creamy, with hint of sourness & filled with tasty zest from pineapples. Owner Ruby explained that she used a lot of fresh pineapple juice to make this dish. Brilliant! I wanna try making this since I won't be able to savour this in S'pore.........There's just so much goodness in this Nonya restaurant in Malacca!

Martin, the GM of Julie's Biscuits, had invited my travel buddy & I to Restoran Atlantic 1 when he learnt that I was extending my stay after the Invitation To A Date With Bloggers At Melaka 2012. He felt that since I was in Malacca, I should try some really good Peranakan food.

The good people of Julie's Biscuits, Evelyn & LiWen picked us up at Casa del Rio & drove us to the venue. It was with regret that Martin couldn't join us as he'd a last minute meeting.

Doris & I felt welcome at Atlantic 1 almost immediately when the owner, Jackson, came to greet us personally. The bubbly & humorous boss kept us entertained throughout the entire dinner, with his wife Ruby, joining us from time to time.

sambal chilli restoran atlantic 1
Instead of an appetizer to start off the meal, Jackson surprised us with a plate of flavourful Sambal Chilli @ RM4. He added that lots of tourists buy this back to their hometown.

pineapple rice at restoran atlantic 1 melaka
Special Pineapple Rice @ RM6.88/pax. Pineapple Rice is a common sight in Thai restaurants etc. However, this is not your usual plate of Pineapple Rice but an aromatic rice filled with interesting ingredients like Corn, Ngoh Hiang & of course the standard stuff like Raisins, Pineapples & Pork Floss. The rice were served in individual cute mini Pineapples. Certainly one of the best I've ever tasted!

fish otak otak restoran atlantic 1 melaka
The Fish Otak-Otak @ RM12(S), RM18(M), RM24(L) is a highly-recommended dish. This spicy steamed fish paste was filled with chunks of fish meat, making every bite such a delight.

nonya chap chai at restoran atlantic 1 melaka
Next on the table was the Nonya Chap Chai @ RM13(S), RM20(M), RM24(L). Nothing to rave about, just a simple mixed vegetable dish.

cincalok omlette at restoran atlantic 1 melaka
Cincalok Omelette @ RM12(S), RM15(M), RM18 was something new to me. I was expecting to dig into something inside the Omelette but it turned out to be just plain. For those who're unfamiliar with this term, Cincalok is made of fermented small Shrimps. But in this egg dish, I couldn't really taste the Cincalok.

chicken rendang restoran atlantic 1 melaka
Beef Rendang is one of my fave dishes but I've never tried it with Chicken. This Chicken Rendang @ RM15(S), RM22(M), RM35(L) is quite different from the rendang I've eaten. Colour is brighter compared to the dark brown ones & you can see the grated coconut outside the chicken. This meat is tender & very tasty.

fish ikan chilli garam restoran atlantic 1 melaka
Ikan Chilli Garam (market price) is another must-try dish. I'd to reconfirm the name of the dish with Ruby as Chilli Garam translated to Chilli & Salt, but it didn't quite reflect the sourish Green Chilli Fish. I'm not a fish lover but I love the unique chilli paste. Doris also added that the fish was fresh & good. It's quite rare to see green chilli paste. Boy, I'm salivating as I'm writing this post.

At Restoran Atlantic 1, even the Pandan Rice is so fragrant. Here's Jackson, serving us the rice personally.

pandan rice, food, chinese
The Special Pandan Rice is going @ RM1.50/pax. You must try this too if you visit this eatery.

chendol dessert restoran atlantic 1 melaka
Well, it appears that Chendol is a popular dessert in Malacca as I seemed to be seeing this at almost every corner. A delightful way to end the heartening meal! Except for the simple vegetable dish & the omelette, the rest of the dishes were superb & way above average. Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

I love the Otak so much that I wanted to buy some home. Instead, the wonderful owners gave me few packs of these frozen Otak. You can actually keep them for as long as a month as long as they're stored in the freezer. Happy!

Many thanks to Atlantic 1 for their warmth hospitality, Julie's Biscuits for hosting this dinner & Julie's staff for spending their precious time entertaining us!

  7. By looking at the pictures I can tell what a treat it was at this restaurant. I am actually loving the pineapple rice and otak otak. Since I love eggs in all forms, I would be interested in trying fermented shrimps in omelet.

  8. Shirley, I should know better than to read your restaurant reviews before breakfast, ha! The flavors you described and succulent photos are making me wish I could order take out! :) That pineapple rice with crumbs & cashews on top (plus the pretty presentation) looked wonderful, as did the fish on the banana leaves. My favorite photo was the bright green rice -- what a pretty color to complement the other dishes -- sounds like you had a great time sampling this cuisine!

  9. OMG Shirley, everything looks delicious as always! Except for the fish..it could be because I was born and raised in the US, I like the fish descaled and in a the form of a square...lol! My mom used to cook the fish whole but the kids wouldn't eat it... LOL! Yes we have fit flips in the US as well, but my sandals are KORS by Michael Kors :)
