Surprise Mom With This Stalk of Abalone Flower On Mother’s Day!

My Dearest Mum,
You taught me what it means to Love & Live
You taught me how to cook good food
And on this special day I made this stalk of Abalone Flower
To thank you for your relentless Love!

You are the music of my life
The most beautiful part of my life!
Happy Mother’s Day! I love U, Mum!!

My family brought forward this Mother’s Day as she’ll be going to China for a vacation with two of her buddies. Mum was overjoyed when she saw the plate of Abalone, specially for her!

I was in one of my wacky moods again & thought of playing with my food. I’m really happy with the outcome. Something very simple but better than buying her a gift. Most importantly, the smile on her face brought me joy. What do you think of my stalk of Abalone Flower?

While she had the entire Abalone Flower to herself, the rest of us tucked into our plate of Abalone with Spinach, a recipe handed down by mummy dearest.

This Calmex brand was a gift from a dear friend who was here for dinner sometime ago. She knew I’ll go wild at the sight of Abalone, so she bought me my favourite brand; the most expensive brand of Abalone from Mexico.

The Abalone just makes me drool. This piece has a net weight of 16oz/454g. The price of Calmex has escalated to S$180/can this year. Unbelievable!

Just last year, mum bought it at S$130 & it was already at a sky-rocket price. I used it to cook Abundance of Joy Abalone (金鲍满屋) last Chinese New Year.

Well, surprise your mum with this Abalone dish & I guarantee you’ll see her face gleam with joy too!

My Stalk of Abalone Flower has also caught the attention of
marketing agent & social media addict Glenda Grace Almega,
who had tweeted my recipe.
She buzzed me with this msg: "You've been featured there!"
Now, how cool is that!

Ingredients:
1 can of Abalone
1 pkt Spinach
1 tsp Wolfberries
1 tsp Oyster sauce
1 tsp Chinese wine
½ tsp Sesame oil
2 tsp Cooking oil
1 tbsp Cornstarch
Pinch of salt

Method:
  1. Wash vegetables thoroughly. Pick out few stalks of spinach & set aside for presentation. Cut up the rest.
  2. Boil unopened can of Abalone for 30 min – 2hrs in hot water. 30 min is sufficient but if you want the Abalone stock to be really rich & fragrant, leave it to boil for 2hrs if you've time. Cool before opening the can.
  3. Cut abalone into slices.
  4. Heat abalone stock. Rinse wolfberries & add into stock. Cook till soft. Drain & set aside.
  5. Throw in stalks of spinach for presentation use. Cook for couple of mins. Drain & set aside. Add in the rest of the vegetables & mix well. Cover & simmer. Spinach is ready when steam emits from the lid. Drain & put on serving plate. Top with abalone slices, leaving some to make the flower.
  6. On another plate, start decorating your stalk of flower.
  7. Heat stock & add cornstarch when boiling. Drizzle the sauce onto the 2 plates of abalone & kill two birds with one stone!
Here's mum enjoying her plate of Abalone. I hope yours will take pleasure as much as she did!

So much for my recipe. Now, here are some reasons why mums are so great (answers given by 2nd-year school children). Have a good laugh!

Why did God make mothers?
  1. She's the only one who knows where the sticky-tape is.
  2. Mostly to clean the house.
  3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

Who's the boss in your house?
  1. Mum doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such an idiot.
  2. Mum. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
  3. I guess mum is, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.

What's the difference between mums & dads?
  1. Mum knows how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
  2. Dads are taller & stronger, but mums have all the real power 'cause that's who you gotta ask if you wanna sleep over at your friend's place.
  3. Mums have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.

If you could change one thing about your mum, what would it be?
  1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
  2. I'd make my mum smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it & not me.
  3. I would like to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.
When you've stopped laughing, share this beautiful flower recipe & the joke with other Mother's, Grandmothers & Aunts...... & anyone else who has anything to do with kids or just needs a good laugh!!!

Happy Mother's Day to all great Mums out there & enjoy your Abalone dish!

  10. As usual Shirley, I see your creative outcome and love it very much. Btw, if I had a chance to change something about my mum, I will give here more opportunity to go out and explore the world. I know how much her life have been, taking care of us and the home. Now that I realise how much she scarified for us, I am in my own ways letting her have the chance to explore the outside world.
