Yam Ring Treasures Recipe (佛钵飘香珍宝)

My apology for neglecting my foodie readers lately as I’ve been busy with product reviews. Nevertheless, I do hope you’ve benefitted from these beauty reviews for the tight pockets, right up to luxurious indulgence.

Today, I’m featuring one of my dishes for my My Chinese New Year Feasts - Yam Ring Treasures ( 法钵飘香珍宝 ). For the non-Chinese, this is a very popular dish for all occasions.

You can get the yam ring from Hup Seng Hng located at Blk 15 Woodlands Loop #04-52. There’re many other foodstuff you can get from Woodlands Loop and Terrace, all at wholesale prices. Read more about my CNY shopping at Seafood Bargains At Woodlands Terrace. So let’s get cooking!

Ingredients:
1 Yam Ring
1 Strip of Chicken breast
5 medium Prawns
2 Chinese Mushrooms
8 Gingko Nuts
8 Cashew Nuts
1 tbsp of Green and Red Capsium each (diced)
3 slices Ginger
3 Sweet Peas
1 Water Chestnut
1 tsp Oyster sauce
½ minced Garlic
½ minced Ginger
1 tbsp Chinese wine
Cooking oil
Pepper to taste
Edible flowers and Bean Vermicelli (Glass Noodles, 粉絲) for presentation

Marinade for Chicken:
1 tsp Oyster sauce
½ tsp Sesame oil
Pepper to taste
Pinch of Cornflour

Method:
  1. Wash and dice chicken. Marinate for at least 30 mins. Dispose shells and de-vein prawns. Wash and dice.
  2. Peel chestnuts. Wash and slice into pieces. Soak mushrooms in water till soft. Remove stem and dice mushrooms.
  3. Remove “veins” from peas by pinching one end and pulling it off. Rinse and set aside.
  4. Heat wok and deep-fry yam ring till golden brown. Drain and put on serving plate.
  5. Deep-fry vermicelli till it expands. Drain and set aside.

  7. Heat wok and sautéed garlic and ginger till fragrant. Stir-fry chicken till half-cooked.

  9. Throw in the rest of the ingredients and seasonings. Mix well.

  11. Transfer into the yam ring when prawns turn pink.

To serve, decorate the ring with the crispy vermicelli. Add in flowers for colours and you’ve a yummy dish to entertain your guests!

  1. I used to dislike Yam Ring when I was small but somehow I get addicted to it now. It is indeed so delicious especially the crispiness of yam ring. So cheap u bought the yam ring. I guess at here, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia not able to find because yam is limited of supply recently.

  11. This is one of favorite dishes in a Chinese dinner. I was actually thinking of making this during the CNY but got lazy. How convenient to have the yam ring pre-made :)
