Fine Dining: Seductive Club Chinois

The tasting dinner menu was a modest S$80++/person, considering I was about to enjoy fine dining in elegant setting of modern Chinese cuisine:

The Amuse Bouche was a trio of Marinated Squid, Fried Seafood & some Vegetables in Red Wine. It was a disappointing start as the young waitress left after serving the Compliments from the Chef, without explaining what the starters were. When questioned, she seemed lost. Politely, she said she’d check with the Chef & revert. However, her answers were vague & we just had to guess what we were eating. tung lok club chinois orchard hotel amuse boucheI think this is totally unacceptable for a fine-dining restaurant as I’d expect the servers to be well-polished. I haven’t been here for more than 6 mths & I was really looking forward for some pleasant surprises. They’ve never failed to impress me but this time, I was kinda let down. The starter was really nothing great. But, the following courses soon compensated for the flaw & I was all smiles again ……

Momotaro Tomato Farcir with Abalone & Crabmeat Salad. The popular Japanese tomato, topped with the crabmeat salad was an intricate & harmonious combination of sweet & tangy flavour. With my favourite Abalone added to the dish, my dissatisfaction was soon forgotten.

Shark Cartilage Soup with Precious Bamboo Shoot. I haven’t tasted real good Shark Cartilage Soup except for Man Fu Yuan & Li Bai. The rest were simply too diluted. However, the version here surprised me. Not only it was served piping hot in claypot, the palatable & sumptuous stock overwhelmed me. Pan-seared Wagyu Beef in Red Wine Reduction paired with Seared Lemongrass Prawn. Mmm……. simply yummy! I’m not fussy, my minimum requirement is just for the Wagyu to melt in my mouth & it did! Pan-fried Marble Goby with Eggplant Sandwich. Now, this is an interesting dish. Fish was deep-fried till crispy & sandwiched between two slices of eggplants over some tomato-based sauce. tung lok club chinois orchard hotel marble goby

Every single dish was there to seduce me. I’m a simple person – forgive & forget, & I’m easily bribed too.Club Chinois, it still remains a leader in culinary creativity.
